Château d’Arques:
A Witness to Medieval Evolution

The château, dating from the 12th and 14th centuries, is an architectural and historical treasure trove. In 1231, a historic turning point occurred when the de Termes family was dispossessed of the castle. It then passed into the hands of Pierre de Voisins, a former lieutenant of Simon de Montfort, a key figure in the crusades against the Cathars. This transition marks an important chapter in the history of the château and the region.

At the end of the 13th century, Gilles de Voisins, son of Pierre, undertook major modifications. He rebuilt the neighboring village as a bastide and initiated the construction of today’s château. These efforts reflect the social and political changes of the time and contribute to the site’s rich history.

In the early 14th century, the castle became a refuge for a small Cathar community. This fact underlines the importance of the château as a place of resistance and refuge during periods of religious persecution.
